My first tape. Not many people checking for me. I’m not upset about it. I haven’t given them reason to yet. This is one accomplishment in my life. It was definitely a long time coming. Lots of obstacles, but we got through. Please believe me when I say that I will continue to do my thing creatively.
This is a beat breakdown for the title track that I made on Ricosuave's Dressing In The Dark. I sampled harmony parts from both live recordings of Aretha Franklin's Spirit In The Dark to create the harmony for the verse. I sampled the phrase "spirit in the dark" from both live recordings and chopped off "spirit" so all that was left was "in the dark" so it would fit with the theme of Dressing In The Dark. (If the song sounds somewhat familiar, Kanye West chopped off "in the dark" so all that was left was "spirit" for School Spirit on College Dropout.)
Staying in the theme of Dressing In The Dark and keeping continuity with Aretha Franklin's vocals, I sampled Hello Sunshine where the horns come in (30 sec in) and Aretha says, "Its been dark for a very long time." I chopped "Its been dark" and looped it three times. Then I chopped "for a very long time" into "for a" "very" and "long time" and looped "very" three times. Running all of it together, it goes from "Its been dark for a very long time" to "Its been dark (horns) Its been dark (horns) Its been dark, for a very very very long time" for the hook.

Even though its kicks, hi hats, and snares, I like for my drum samples to have thematic significance as well. So to add to the samples of Spirit In The Dark and Hello Sunshine, the drum loops are samples from both the Jackson 5 (beginning) and the Harlem Underground Band's (50 secs in) renditions of Ain't No Sunshine.
Then to add some theatrics to the beat, I sampled the power outage from Ocean's Eleven for the intro.
The end result is the instrumental for Dressing In The Dark.

Look what I found…MY FIRST BOOK EVER!!! I was a legend around town with this book. At 2 yrs old, people thought that I had memorized it lol. I used to take it everywhere. Its still in pretty good condition though…
A day in the life of a Howard student…my 2006 flow…funny to listen to myself rapping then. Hip Hop Is Dead & Kingdom Come had just come out & I like to listen to an artist’s discography right before a new album drops so I can put the new work in proper context. That’s why you can hear that New York-ish unnecessary edge in my voice. I don’t think my voice is this deep now lol. “Corner” lmao. Oh yeah, I did this with $15 Walmart gaming headphones with the microphone coming off the ear & the FL Studio demo. That’s SO hip-hop to me…Im thinking about doing a Decoded for this lol…seriously though, there is a story behind every line of this song…Enjoy!
